Meanwhile, the brand is investing in digital roll-outs, including its SPIN Play iPad app. In June, SPIN shuffled its editorial and publisher ranks in an effort to capitalize on its cross-platform efforts. Editor-in-chief Doug Brod and publisher Malcolm Campbell were let go and Jeff Rogers was hired into the new position of digital general manager. Reflective of the ongoing shuffle magazines go through to zero in on the right print-digital formula, music magazine SPIN is reportedly reducing its frequency from monthly to bimonthly starting with the March 2012 issue. In addition, it will be adjusting its rate base downward from 450,000 to 350,000.Not all is contracting, however. The magazine is investing in heavier paper stock and a larger trim size—9.5 by 12 inches. The adjustments point to a refinement of the brand’s print and digital strategies into the familiar formula of relegating quick-hit, newsier content to the website and longer form writing for print.Issues will continue to pursue a theme approach. The October issue is the dance issue, September featured style, August was devoted to the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind album, and so on.

Car Industry 50 Photos Review • Tesla Model 3 Review: Performance trim Tags Elon Musk Preview • 2018 Tesla Model 3 Performance: The future, quicker Enlarge ImageElon Musk appeared pretty happy after leaving federal court in April, even though he’s still subject to oversight on some potential tweet material. Spencer Platt/Getty Images Elon Musk and the US Securities and Exchange Commission may have finally quashed their beef, with Musk avoiding a contempt charge, but that doesn’t mean every SEC commissioner is on board with the final deal.Musk and the SEC reached an agreement Friday over what public statements require legal oversight before posting. Yet, a statement from SEC commissioner Robert Jackson shows that there is some dissent within the group’s ranks.”Given Mr. Musk’s conduct, I cannot support a settlement in which he does not admit what is crystal clear to anyone who has followed this bizarre series of events: Mr. Musk breached the agreement he made last year with the Commission — and with American investors,” Jackson said Tuesday in a statement. The settlement, which was publicized shortly after both parties asked a federal judge for an extension in negotiations, added clearer and more enforceable language regarding what Musk can and can’t tweet without requiring the green light from a securities lawyer. The agreement, which can be read in full below, forbids Musk from oversight-free public comments (read: tweets) about production or delivery numbers, comments on the company’s financial health, new lines of business unrelated to current lines of business and more. Musk first ended up in hot water with the SEC after his infamous “funding secured” tweet, in which he claimed Tesla had secured the dough to go private at $420 per share. That never happened, and the SEC eventually filed a lawsuit against Musk, alleging securities fraud. That happened late in 2018, but Musk again found himself in the SEC’s crosshairs in early 2019, after the SEC alleged a couple tweets about production numbers were enough for a contempt charge. Last week’s settlement means Musk has avoided the charge, but that doesn’t mean the SEC won’t keep a watchful eye on his Twitter account for a long time to come. 2020 BMW M340i review: A dash of M makes everything better Post a comment 2020 Kia Telluride review: Kia’s new SUV has big style and bigger value Tesla Model 3 barrels through the snow in Track Mode More From Roadshow 2020 Hyundai Palisade review: Posh enough to make Genesis jealous 0 Tesla Share your voice More about 2018 Tesla Model 3 Performance
Gay couple that was attacked while onboard a night bus in London on May 30TwitterIn a yet another glaring homophobic attack in London, a gay couple was physically assaulted and suffered severe facial injuries after they refused to kiss while travelling on a London bus on May 30. Melania Geymonat and her partner Chris were on board a bus in West Hampstead when a gang of teenagers aged between 15 and 18 attacked the couple. The couple was reportedly asked about sexual positions and gestures when the boys suspected they were gay. “They surrounded us and started saying really aggressive stuff, things about sexual positions, lesbians and claiming we could kiss so they could watch us,” Geymont told BBC. The couple said that they initially took the matter as a joke and acted calm, but soon the situation went out of hand. “My partner Chris even acted as if she were sick and they started throwing coins and next thing I know, they are punching her in the face,” she added.Geymont said that as soon as she tried to help Chris, even she was physically assaulted and suffered injuries. She said that she had earlier suffered verbal abuse due to her sexuality, but a physical assault on the couple had not happened ever.Attackers arrested as the incident sparks outrageThe police have arrested four teenage boys who were found involved in the homophobic crime as the incident has sparked national outrage over the recurring attacks on the LGBT community in London. “This was a sickening attack and my thoughts are with the couple affected. Nobody should ever have to hide who they are or who they love and we must work together to eradicate unacceptable violence towards the LGBT community,” President Theresa May said while condemning the incident. Sexual minorities are vying hard for equal laws in India. [In File: Lesbian couple hold hands during the annual Gay Pride rally, on June 8, 2007 Tel Aviv, Israel’s most cosmopolitan city]David Silverman/Getty ImagesThe official reports suggest that during the period between 2014 and 2018, the number of homophobic crimes in London alone has doubled from 1,488 to 2,308. The increase in the crime rate has visibly increased fears among the LGBT community, who even avoid holding hands in public.Geymont said that she is not afraid to show her real self to the people but still is disappointed as London which is one of the most modern cities in the world is still not come to terms with different sexualities. Even as the June is being celebrated as the month of gay pride and one of the largest LGBT festivals is currently underway in the city, the bus attack has served as a grim reminder on how the reforms and security are still needed to address the concerns of LGBT community.
This handout photograph released by the Indian Navy on 18 August 2018 shows Sajita Jabeel, 25, with her newborn boy in a hospital in Kochi, after she was rescued while heavily pregnant from a roof in a flood affected area of Kochi in the southern state of Kerala. Photo: AFPA heavily pregnant woman stranded by floods in the Indian state of Kerala gave birth just after being airlifted to safety, an Indian Navy spokesman said, as the military stepped up rescue operations on Saturday.Dozens of navy helicopters have embarked on high-risk missions to save people from rooftops and isolated land as the southern state battles a flood crisis that has left at least 324 people dead.Sajita Jabeel, 25, was winched up by Commander Vijay Verma, who has been widely praised for leading the rescue in the Aluva district of the state’s main city Kochi.”The lady was in labour, her water had broken,” Verma told News18 television. He called the relief mission “very challenging” and said his team had rushed to find the family after receiving an emergency call.”We took a doctor along, we winched her up, it took some time though because we had to winch down two people to help her.”Jabeel gave birth to a healthy baby boy after being rushed to hospital.People are airlifted by the Indian Navy soldiers during a rescue operation at a flooded area in the southern state of Kerala, India on 17 August 2018. Rajkumar’s Sea King helicopter pulling up the victims has been widely shared on social media. He ended up with 32 people on board.”It was a life-threatening mission but it’s an unprecedented situation. We can’t leave behind our people,” Indian Navy spokesman DK Sharma told AFP.Rajkumar was given the Shaurya Chakra medal for bravery this week after lifting a fisherman from the sea when cyclone Ockhi hit India last year.
The hemisphere with the “preferred” direction on the left, in contrast to the opposite hemisphere on the right. The color of the dots represents the sign and magnitude of the anisotropy level. Image credit: Cai, et al. Statistical modeling could help us understand cosmic acceleration But a few recent studies have found the possible existence of cosmological anisotropy: specifically, that the universe’s expansion is accelerating at a faster rate in one direction than another. In the most recent study, scientists have analyzed data from 557 Type 1a supernovae and found, in agreement with some previous studies, that the universe’s expansion seems to be accelerating faster in the direction of a small part of the northern galactic hemisphere. The researchers, Rong-Gen Cai and Zhong-Liang Tuo from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, have posted their study at arXiv.org. A valuable tool for cosmologists, Type 1a supernovae serve as “standard candles” due to their consistent peak luminosity, allowing researchers to measure their distance with high accuracy. Observations of these supernovae famously revealed in 1998 that the universe is not only expanding, but is doing so at an accelerating rate. And now, some observations of Type 1a supernovae at different locations in the sky hint that the acceleration is not uniform in all directions. In their analysis, Cai and Tuo looked at the deceleration parameter, q0, to quantify the anisotropy level of the northern galactic and southern galactic hemispheres. As the scientists explain in their study, the direction with the smaller value of q0 is expanding faster than the direction with the larger value. The researchers analyzed the data using both a dynamical dark energy model and a standard model without dark energy, and found that both models revealed similar results: an anisotropy deviation of 0.76 and 0.79, respectively, and a preferred direction of (309°, 21°) and (314°, 28°), respectively. As noted by the Physics arXiv Blog, this direction of greatest acceleration is in the faint constellation of Vulpecula in the northern hemisphere. But as Cai and Tuo note in their study, the case is far from closed. In contrast with the current results, some previous analyses of Type 1a supernovae data have not found any statistically significant evidence for anisotropies. And many other data – such as that for the cosmic microwave background radiation, galaxy statistics, and dark matter haloes – strongly support the assumption of homogeneity and isotropy on the cosmic scale. Yet considering that the cosmological principle is one of the pillars of modern cosmology whose fundamental importance is difficult to exaggerate, threats to its credibility won’t be taken lightly. If the cosmological principle turns out to be wrong, it would dramatically change the way we look at the world. (PhysOrg.com) — According to the cosmological principle, there is no special place or direction in the universe when viewed on the cosmic scale. The assumption enabled Copernicus to propose that Earth was not the center of the universe and modern scientists to assume that the laws of physics are the same everywhere. Due to the cosmological principle, scientists also assume that the universe is “homogeneous” – having a uniform structure throughout – and “isotropic” – having uniform properties throughout. Citation: Evolutionary psychologists find macaques more likely influenced by friends than family (2012, January 12) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-01-evolutionary-psychologists-macaques-friends-family.html Explore further Study shows Facebook friend relationships due mostly to similarities between people © 2011 PhysOrg.com When macaques are together, they tend to pair up with friends; other macaques that they spend more time with than others in the group. As part of their “friendship” pairs groom one another and pick off fleas, etc. And macaques, like people and many other animals, also note when other members of their group turn to look at something, and then turn to look as well to see what’s up. It is thought that such gaze following is a natural form of self-preservation. After all, if a predator has suddenly appeared behind you, and someone you are interacting with suddenly looks and sees them, it makes a lot of sense to turn and have a look yourself. But what the two found surprising was the time lag between noting a change in gaze, and then in turning to look in response, with the macaques. They found that when it was a friend doing the gazing, there was little to no lag at all. But when it was anybody else, it took slightly longer, regardless of whether it was family or a group leader.Micheletta and Waller don’t suggest they know for sure why this is, but do theorize that it might be because the macaques view their friends more importantly than they do others in the group, or that because of their bond, they look forward to sharing in whatever the other has found. Or, it also seems plausible that they simply trust their friends more, and thus don’t hesitate to turn and look when they see their friend has found something of interest. The two researchers also hint that such behavior might shed some light on human relationships as well, but as yet, haven’t undertaken a study to find out if people would react the same way, and if they do, what it might mean. (PhysOrg.com) — In order to better understand human relationships, researchers who study such things often turn to other primates for the simple reason that they are more accessible, being locked up in zoos and such. Thus, PhD student Jerome Micheletta, at the University of Portsmith in the UK, found himself studying the crested macaque in the Marwell Wildlife Zoological Park. It was while doing so that he discovered that the macaques tended to follow the gaze of a friend more quickly than they did others, such as family members. Micheletta along with Dr. Dr Bridget Waller have published their findings on this research in the journal Animal Behavior. More information: Press release
Pronouncing the quantum of punishment during in-camera proceedings, Additional Sessions Judge Chiranjib Bhattacharya also slapped fines of Rs.1 lakh each on the three accused – Ruman Khan, Naser Khan and Sumit Bajaj.”The judge after considering all aspects and hearing the accused persons on the quantum of sentence, sent them to 10 years of rigrorous imrpisonment, with fine of Rs.1 lakh each under section 376 (2)(g) (of the Indian Penal Code) dealing with gangrape. In default, they would have to serve another six months of rigorous imprisonment,” said a lawyer associated with the case.
