In the third, Wellington added a 10-yard touchdown to open up a 27-0 lead. Then the Lions made a comeback scoring three touchdowns in the final quarter. The comeback fell short because in the middle of it, Nance and Reichenberger connected for a 64 yard touchdown pass. Wellington scored four of its five touchdowns on big plays. Not only did the junior duo score on touchdowns of 69, 35, and 54 yards, but sophomore Connor Phelps would return an interception 90 yards for a touchdown. We’ll get to the record books soon, because something had to fall. This game was wacky – no other words to describe it. Both teams had trouble holding onto the football. Both teams were oftentimes their own worst enemies and the sequence of events in the final two minutes teetered close to the paranormal. But in the end, none of it mattered. Wellington was the champions – at least in this contest on this night.“We have a lot to work on,” said Tyler Ryan, Wellington head football coach. “But I am so happy for the kids and for our town. We really needed this week one win. I can’t tell you how excited I am.”There is a commercial on television about people who are comfortable in their own skin. For the first time in years, the Wellington football team looked more comfortable in its own skin.It was apparent from the onset. Goddard had moved into enemy territory in the first quarter. But Jason Norris stripped the ball and recovered a fumble. One play later. Nance faked a throw to the flat and then threw a long spiral to Reichenberger who has already outran the safety. The touchdown pass was good for 69 yards and Wellington had a 7-0 lead. After a personal foul penalty on a punt, Wellington started on the Goddard 27. The Crusaders went to the well again and Nance scored on a 35 yard touchdown pass giving the Crusaders a 13-0 lead.In the second quarter, the two teams exchanged punts but eventually Goddard was winning the field possession battle. After Tucker Vang got Goddard to the 18, he then threw an ill advised pass into the numbers of Conner Phelps.Phelps would take it 90 yards. No one could catch him.Again Goddard got deep into Wellington territory to end the first half but failed to pick up recommended yardage on fourth down. The second half, Goddard would move back into Wellington country, and again the Lions were thwarted. Wellington then pieced together a drive and on third and 4, Nance threw to Reichenberger for a 35 yard gain.Wellington got a first down when sophomore Remington Gilkey tore around the right side to the Goddard 12. Then Nance scored on a 10-yard quarterback keeper. The Crusaders were cruising 27-0.But learning to win is one thing, delivering the knockout punch is another. The Crusaders could not quite accomplishment the easy win.Goddard would go on a substantial drive to narrow the lead to three touchdowns. And when it looked like Wellington was on its way with a drive of its own, it fumbled at midfield. The Lions scored to narrow the margin to 27-14.Wellington then needed something good to happen. And Nance delivered a gift to Reichenberger again – this one for 69 yards. The Crusaders were back in front 34-14.Goddard would start the next possession at midfield and drove it down to the 16 before Taylon Lamkin recovered a fumble. Wellington got a couple of first downs but the Crusaders fumbled the ball again at the 33. Goddard drove again but threw the ball to Nance for an interception. Wellington would eventually have to punt. Nance, who was maimed on the punt with no call, got it to the Goddard 45.Then Vang would scramble 48 yards for a touchdown with 1:11 to play. The Lions were getting dangerously closer, 34-21.The last minute saw Wellington get two unsportsmanlike penalties which stopped the clock and gave Goddard the opportunity to score one more touchdown. Goddard would score on a 9-yard throw with 5 seconds to play to make it 34-28.That left an onside kick where Wellington was able to secure the ball and finally put this one away.Wow what a win, what a game.
