It wouldve been really nice to face Messi – Alvarez

first_imgAhead of Friday’s friendly match between Mexico and Argentina, El Tri defender Edson Alvarez regrets that Argentina star, Lionel Messi won’t feature in the match.Argentina would usually be the top dog against Mexico but for the friendly match on Friday, where Messi will be absent, Mexican defender feels it’s time for Mexican football shine.“It would’ve been really nice to face Messi,” said Alvarez in a press conference Wednesday, before training in Cordoba, according to ESPN.“But his health comes first. Personally, it would’ve great to play against him.”Speaking in comparison of Mexican’s victory against Germany in the 2018 World Cup and their upcoming match against Argentina, Alvarez continued:“We’ve shown that in adversity when we are the underdogs we step up,”“I like these challenges … what better way to show our quality than now, against a great team in front of their fans? We all want to play the game already.”“The quality and potential is there,”FC Barcelona, Valencia CFMatch Preview: Barcelona vs Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Is derby time in La Liga, as Barcelona welcomes Valencia to the Camp Nou Stadium tonight at 21:00 (CET).He also encouraged any new coach coming to focus on improving the mentality of the team and gave a little hint about his future.“We’ve missed out more because of mentality. We block ourselves. We showed the world against Germany that we were better than them. Mexican football can move forward.”“Playing in Europe is every player’s dream, at least it is mine,” said Alvarez when asked by ESPN.“There is interest from certain teams and that is the only thing I can say.”On the other hand, the Argentine federation (AFA) president Claudio Tapia believes Messi will soon be back for the national team.“Having the best player in the world gives you a better possibility of doing well and we all want that,” said Tapia on Monday in a news conference.“Now is the time to stop stewing over what happened in the World Cup and I have no doubt that [Messi] will continue [with Argentina]. City officials break ground on new library in San Ysidro

first_img KUSI Newsroom, SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — City officials broke ground Friday on a library in San Ysidro, following more than two decades of discussion and planning. The 15,000-square-foot library will be built at Seaward Avenue and Beyer Boulevard at a cost of $13.5 million. It will replace the existing branch library in the city’s southernmost neighborhood. At nearly a century old, the existing library is the city’s oldest, according to the mayor’s office.“This is all about opening doors to opportunity and a brighter future,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said. “This new branch library has been a long time coming for the San Ysidro community and represents One San Diego in action. It’s going to be more than just a place to check out a book. It’s going to be a place where the community gathers and where neighborhood children can learn and grow.”The building will be LEED Silver certified and feature amenities such as an outdoor reading patio and movie screen, public art, a teen center, study areas, computer lab, multi-purpose room and accommodations for those with disabilities.Councilman David Alvarez, who represents San Ysidro, spearheaded fundraising efforts for the library, which is expected to open in 2019, the mayor said.Alvarez said building a new library was one of his top priorities upon being elected.“I was proud to work with the community to secure the site and funding for this long-awaited project,” he said. The city purchased land for the library in 2015 and will contribute $12 million to the project. The San Diego Library Foundation has launched a campaign to raise $250,000 for the project and philanthropists and former San Ysidro residents Lloyd and Caroline de Llamas contributed $1.5 million, according to the mayor’s office. Yet another BASIC Bank forgery revealed

first_img-State-owned BASIC Bank, which earned notoreity for loan forgery involving billions of Taka in recent years, has lost Tk 760 million on the pretext of purchasing office space for the bank. This scam has been revealed by a finance ministry investigation that also found the bank’s controversial former chairman, Abdul Hye Bachchu, involved. For purchasing a building for the BASIC Bank head office, it paid Tk 760 million although the building was on a disputed plot of land, according to the investigation. Still, the bank has not been handed over a single floor of the building.Seven years ago, BASIC Bank had signed a deal with a certain Sinku Akramuzzaman for the purchase of 12 floors of a building opposite Bangladesh Bank and Sena Kalyan Sangshta for Tk 810 million. The bank paid money and construction begun accordingly. Now the finance ministry sees the deal has no legal bindings. Even the land on which the building has been constructed, is abandoned property. There is a case in court regarding the land, shows the record.According to the rules, permission must be taken from the president (presently the prime minister) for the construction of a new building for a state-owned bank or financial institution, or for the extension, renovation and maintenance of an old building for the purpose. The government issued directives twice in this regard, in 1985 and in 1998. But, as it is found, BASIC Bank did not comply with the procedure. After the meeting of the cabinet committee on purchase this Thursday, finance minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith was asked about this scam which took place during the tenure of Abdul Hye Bachchu. The finance minister said to Prothom Alo that all his (Abdul Hye Bachchu) dealings in BASIC Bank were sheer robbery. “And it is not just one incident,” he added.Secretary of the financial institutions division of the finance ministry Mohammed Yunus Rahman, while talking to Prothom Alo before Eid, also said, “We’re extremely concerned about this. It is unfortunate that the contract isn’t registered. I blame the authorities of the bank at that time for such a large sum of money going out of the bank.”This beginning of this underhand deal transpired three months after Abdul Hye Bachchu joined BASIC Bank as its chairman in September 2009. In the minutes signed by him of the 261st board meeting of the bank held on 13 December 2009, it was stated that he had expressed surprise at the meeting that the bank did not have its own building after 20 years. A decision was adopted at the meeting for the bank to have its own building. On 1 April 2010, BASIC Bank signed a contract with Sinku Akramuzzaman to purchase space of 51,500 square feet in Motijheel of the capital city Dhaka. This tripartite deal stated that BASIC Bank would give Tk 810 million to Akramuzzaman and he would construct a 15-storey building, of which 12 floors would be given to BASEC Bank. The building would be named Zaman BASIC Bank Tower. The finance ministry now finds that Akramuzzaman himself was two of the three parties involved in the deal. His company, Business Resources Limited, was constructing the building.Recent communication between BASIC Bank and the financial institutions division revealed that the bank paid Akramuzzaman Tk 400 million on the very day that the deal was signed. Then, in instalments, the bank paid him another Tk 360 million. In 2013 a structure of the building was somehow completed.Despite having paid Tk 760 million, not a single floor has been handed over to the bank as yet. As for Akramuzzaman, he has fled abroad.Akramuzzaman has purchased a home in Malaysia and has settled there with his family, according to persons in the bank who have knowledge of the matter. It was not possible to get him over the cell phone. He has not replied to repeated emails either. It was at the behest of Abdul Hye Bachchu that half the payment was handed over on the day that the deal was signed.Foul play is suspected here too.At the time, none of the board members spoke up. The bank’s managing director (MD) at the time, AKM Sajedur Rahman, was kept behind the scenes of the matter. In the meantime, in a spate of unprecedented irregularities between April 2012 and March 2013, the board under Abdul Hye Bachchu pilfered over Tk 34.93 billion through loans to various persons.Bangladesh Bank had investigated the matter and observed that it would not be possible to recover these loans. And indeed, the loans are yet to be recovered. The BASIC Bank officials point out that there are further complications pertaining to the building. For example, they say, Akramuzzaman constructed seven more floors on the building and has been pressuring the bank to purchase those too. He estimated the cost to be Tk 1.62 billion with the seven new floors and demanded an advance of another Tk 810 million. The bank did not agree. The financial institutions division on 7 August this year issued a letter to the present chairman of BASIC Bank, Khandakar Mohammed Iqbal, asking for a detailed explanation about the purchase of the building without government approval. The government in July 2012 dissolved the BASIC Bank’s board of directors due to rampant corruption and irregularities which had swamped the bank. But Abdul Hye Bachchu took the liberty to submit his resignation to the finance minister a day before the term of the board expired. The government then revamped the board and appointed the bank’s previous MD Alauddin A Majid as the chairman. The financial institutions division also wanted to know why there had been such a long delay in revealing the matter of this large financial involvement despite the board being in place for three years now. The division was not satisfied with the explanation submitted by the MD on 21 August. In his explanation, MD Khandakar Mohammed Iqbal said that the land was abandoned property since 1989. There was a case as to whether the government or Akramuzzaman was the proprietor of the land. Last year the verdict was passed in Akramuzzaman’s favour, but the problem remained unresolved due to his stubborn attitude.BASIC Bank chairman Alauddin A Majid told Prothom Alo this was just one incident in many. The present board is having to bear the brunt of this incident which took place seven years ago.During a recent visit to the site in Motijheel, this correspondent saw the structure of a 22-storey building, with a signboard, ‘Zaman BASIC Bank Tower Bhaban’.Along with Abdul Hye Bachchu, on the bank board at that time were the present vice chairman of the Export Development Bureau (EDP) and joint secretary at the time Bijoy Bhattacharya, former DG of the prime minister’s office Nilufar Ahmed, chairman of BSCIC chairman at the time Siddiqur Rahman, chairman at the time of Kushtia Islamic University’s accounting and information systems department Kazi Akhter Hossain and others.Though AKM Sajedur Rahman was the bank’s MD at the time, he had gone abroad on medical treatment. The acting MD was Sheikh Manzur Morshed. Bijoy Bhattacharya then left for Switzerland due to his job and the present commerce secretary Subhashish Basu took his stead.Bijoy Bhattacharya told Prothom Alo, he had stopped attending board meetings towards the end as he was fed up. Subhashish Basu said it was not possible for the board to verify the details of the land. That was basically the responsibility of the management.Several attempts to contact Abdul Hye Bachchu over phone have failed. He did not reply to any SMS either. The supervisor at his house in Banani DOHS said he was out and does not always stay at this house. The finance minister even in parliament had held Abdul Hye Bachchu responsible for the corruption in BASIC Bank. However, the Anti-Corruption Commission has done nothing in this regard. The finance minister has not lost hope and told Prothom Alo, “I think ACC is doing something about the matter.”According to Bangladesh Bank, BASIC Bank’s default loans stand at 53 per cent (Tk 73.9 billion), higher than the default loans of any other bank in the country.*The article, originally published in Prothom Alo Bangla print edition, has been rewritten in English by Ayesha Kabirlast_img read more

How do you juggle these three seemingly disparate areas of your life?I don’t view them as disparate. My goal in everything I do is to uplift and inspire and use entertainment as a way to do that. So anything I’m doing, whether it’s writing a book, or producing a movie, or speaking or preaching, it’s all with the same goal: How does the person that is engaging with me relative to what I’m doing in that moment — how can their life become potentially better or how can I say something or do something that can inspire them? It’s like one wheel, just different spokes.DeVon Franklin. Courtesy photoHow did you learn about the story behind “Breakthrough,” and how much is it a true story rather than “based on a true story”?I found out about “Breakthrough” while I was promoting “Miracles from Heaven.” I met the family, Joyce Smith and (her son) John Smith, and Pastor Jason Noble. And when I heard their story I was blown away. It was just so captivating. I just knew that I had to bring it to the big screen. When you look at films, there’s “based on a true story,” there’s “inspired by a true story,” there’s “inspired by true events,” but based on a true story is when it’s closest to the real story. And “Breakthrough” is without a doubt based on a true story.“Breakthrough” comes to theaters around Easter. How has the success of your previous productions, including the animated Christmas movie, “The Star,” enabled you to present this new one?I think every success is like stair steps — one leads to the other. And so “Breakthrough” being my third produced film, certainly, is building on the success of “The Star” and building on the success of “Miracles from Heaven.”In “The Star,” celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Kristin Chenoweth added their voices to that story. In “Breakthrough,” main characters are portrayed by actress Chrissy Metz and actor Mike Colter. Has there been a shift in the willingness of mainstream actors and actresses to appear in Christian films?Yes. What is amazing about this story “Breakthrough” — it’s a true story, and I think that sometimes the desire to put it in the faith-based genre sometimes overshines the fact that it’s true. And more people are looking to do a true story because they connect to it more so than it being a part of the faith-based genre per se. So it’s a blessing that these projects are able to get the attention of such incredible talent.Following the example of other brother filmmaker teams, there’s a movie called “Sinners Wanted” that just premiered at a black megachurch in Maryland in March. Do you see more people trying to develop Christian films for the big screen? And do you think those smaller projects have more of a chance of being recognized by Hollywood than in the past?I’m not familiar with that particular movie. I do think that there’s a lot of growth in this space. The Erwin brothers, who are my good friends, they did “I Can Only Imagine.” And that success led to an incredible new opportunity with Lionsgate for more projects to come through, which is great.I have my deal here at Fox. The Kendrick brothers, who also do inspirational faith-based movies, they have a deal with Sony. I think ultimately as the right movies are developed and people find them, it’ll allow for even more new filmmakers and new films that may not currently be on the radar to emerge.DeVon Franklin, from left, Jeff Lockyer and Danielle Strickland participate in a panel discussion about sexual misconduct with the Willow Creek Association near Chicago. Video screenshotTurning to a completely different subject, you have spoken in a new video resource about ministry and #MeToo. What are some key tips you suggest for men to help reduce the chances of women becoming victims of sexual abuse or harassment? One of the reasons why I wanted to write the book is because I do believe that, as men, we need to become better. And part of that is learning to love, and that means considering others’ needs before ours and putting our integrity and our character above the desire to sometimes feed those selfish impulses.I challenge every man to not look at the #MeToo movement as a women’s movement. It’s not. We need to be a part of this movement. Whether we have been harassed ourselves or not, we need to help. It takes both of us to get it done. We have to be a part of the solution ’cause if not, I think we’re part of the problem. You had spoken about how the #MeToo movement can cause some men to feel that they can’t or shouldn’t hire women who may be most qualified for a position in their church or other organization. What’s your advice for them?My advice is to not allow fear to dictate decision-making, because, any man that’s afraid to hire a woman, it’s because of fear and a misconception of what’s really going on.I think that it’s important that we hire the very best people. And if that happens to be a woman, we need to hire her. And, to me, a man that’s afraid to do that says more about the man than it does the woman. And it’s so important to not use #MeToo as an excuse to be afraid.Let’s use #MeToo and #TimesUp as an excuse to become better and do that in every area of our life, including our hiring practices. As someone raised in the Seventh-day Adventist faith, how do you keep your Sabbath even as you work on round-the-clock projects related to film and faith? The first day that I was in Hollywood, I literally said when I was interviewing for the company that managed Will Smith, “I won’t take this internship if it requires me to work on the Sabbath.” And, every single job that I’ve ever taken since then, I’ve made it a part of it.And observing the Sabbath is so important for a number of reasons, not just spiritual reasons, but also practical reasons. We are not built to run 24/7. And what I have found is if we block out some time to rest, people conform around that. I’ve been on set, producing films, and then I’m like, “Hey, all right, the sun is almost down. I got to go.”It’s been integral to my success. And I highly recommend it to everyone ’cause I think it really makes a big difference. By: Adelle M. Banks AMBankstw Share This! Share This! Newslast_img read more

Maxwells demons may drive some biological systems

first_imgConventionally, the switching mechanism was thought to operate in equilibrium, where the switch changes between clockwise and counterclockwise motor rotations in a balanced way. An earlier experiment showed that the time interval a flagllear motor spends in a given state (either clockwise or counterclockwise) follows a peaked distribution. Based on Tu’s work, this peaked interval time distribution indicates that the switch operates out of equilibrium. In order to achieve this fast and accurate switching, the switch must be extremely sensitive to the CheY-P concentration. In the non-equilibrium model, Tu shows that this high sensitivity can be explained by the presence of two Maxwell’s demons, which act as the switch’s sensors for the CheY-P. “The easiest way to explain the work of these two Maxwell’s demons is that they are two coincidence counters,” he said. “Each switch can have up to 34 CheY-P regulators bind to it. One of the demons will count the number of bound CheY-P, and if the number is greater than some threshold, say 22, it will switch the motor from CCW to CW; another demon works the opposite way with a low threshold, say 12. If the number of CheY-P bound is less than 12, this demon will switch the motor from CW to CCW.”These “demons” consume energy to do their work, in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics. The more energy the demons use, the more sensitive the switch is. Tu determined the exact amount of energy used per switch cycle, and discovered that it is roughly equal to the work done by one or two protons moving through the membrane near the flagellar motor. Based on this finding, he predicts that the switch may be powered by protons passing through the membrane. This possibility would agree with earlier observations that the average switching frequency depends on the proton flux.As Tu explains, viewing the flagellar motor switch in the framework of a non-equilibrium model could help scientists understand the switching mechanism as an integrated part of the motor system. In biology, many systems operate out of equilibrium, and Tu’s model could help scientists detect interesting non-equilibrium effects. Besides the flagellar motor, he predicts that a similar non-equilibrium mechanism, driven by Maxwell’s demons, could be responsible for a variety of other cellular processes.More information: Tu, Yuhai. “The nonequilibrium mechanism for ultrasensitivity in a biological switch: Sensing by Maxwell’s demons.” PNAS, August 19, 2008, vol. 105, no. 33, 11737-11741.Copyright 2008 PhysOrg.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed in whole or part without the express written permission of PhysOrg.com. (PhysOrg.com) — According to the second law of thermodynamics, entropy always increases. For example, two bodies of different temperatures, when brought into contact, will eventually mix together to result in a uniform temperature. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. But, as the physicist James Clerk Maxwell famously suggested in 1871, what would happen if a theoretical demon could stand at a doorway between the two bodies, and only allow high-temperature particles to pass through one way, and only low-temperature particles to pass through the other? The tiny doorman would prevent the two temperatures from mixing, and theoretically prevent entropy. Of course, the demon would use energy to do this job, thus creating entropy itself, and so the second law would not be violated. While Maxwell’s demon was originally considered a thought experiment, similar mechanisms have been discovered for various applications. One example is a Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube, which is a pneumatic device that separates hot and cold air by spinning hot and cold molecules in different directions. Now, a recent study shows that a similar mechanism may drive a motor switch in the bacteria Escherichia coli, and may be responsible for many other signaling systems in biology. Researcher Yuhai Tu at IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, explains how E. coli’s Maxwell’s demons work in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.“There are two related contributions made in this paper,” Tu told PhysOrg.com. “First, a general non-equilibrium mechanism for making a highly sensitive switch (i.e., how Maxwell’s demons can be used to increase sensitivity). Second, a general result on dwell-time statistics (how long a system should stay in a given state before it switches to other states). This result can be used as a diagnostic tool to detect the existence of these demons (or non-equilibrium effects) in an unknown system.”The bacterium contains flagellar motors that drive its motion. A flagellar motor has a switch (a shift gear) whose job is to sense the concentration of a regulator called CheY-P, and then control the rotational direction of the motor to be either clockwise (CW) or counterclockwise (CCW), accordingly. “The purpose of the CW and CCW switch is to control the motion of the cell,” Tu said. “The CheY-P level is the signal (red/yellow/green light) which affects the switch (stop/slow/move). In a very loose sense, CCW results in movement and CW results in switching direction. The bacterium cell needs to control these two types of motions to navigate towards (away from) favorable (toxic) environments.” Video games are a ‘great equalizer’ for people with disabilities Citation: Maxwell’s demons may drive some biological systems (2008, September 10) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2008-09-maxwell-demons-biological.html Explore furtherlast_img read more

Mexico hunts drug kingpin probes prison guards

first_imgMEXICO CITY, Mexico — Mexican security forces scrambled Monday to save face and recapture drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán as authorities investigated whether guards helped him escape prisonthrough a tunnel under his cell. For the second time in 14 years the head of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel managed to flee a maximum-security prison, dealing an embarrassing setback to President Enrique Peña Nieto.Troops and police were deployed to hunt down Guzmán after he vanished late Saturday from the Altiplano prison 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Mexico City, after just 17 months behind bars.Prosecutors questioned 30 prison employees of various rank, including the warden, the attorney general’s office said, signaling suspicions of an inside job.The guards in charge of the capo’s cell and those who monitored the surveillance cameras that look into the room were among those interrogated, an official in the attorney general’s office said.Authorities had already investigated a strange prison visit to Guzmán in March when a woman managed to see him by using a fake ID to enter the jail.On a state visit to Paris, Peña Nieto said Guzmán’s escape was “an affront to the state” and demanded an investigation into whether prison guards helped him.Guzmán, 58, who nurtured a Robin Hood image in his northwestern state of Sinaloa while running the most powerful and one of the most ruthless cartels in Mexico, was able to slip out even though surveillance cameras were trained on his cell.He went into his private shower and after he failed to come out guards found a hole 10 meters (33 feet) deep with a ladder in it.The gap led to a 1.5-kilometer tunnel with a ventilation and light system that was apparently dug with the help of a motorcycle mounted on a rail to transport tools and remove earth. The sophisticated tunnel led to a gray brick building on a hill surrounded by pastures in central Mexico State.Prosecutors released a video showing the hole inside the building’s dirt-covered floor. A bed and kitchen were in the facility, indicating that people had lived there.Against the clockAs investigators tried to figure out how Guzmán busted out again, police and troops manned checkpoints and searched cars and trucks on nearby roads.Mike Vigil, a retired U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) international operations chief, warned that if Guzmán is not captured in the next day or so he will vanish for good.“If he is able to make his way to Sinaloa, his native state, and gets into that mountainous range, it’s going to be very difficult to capture him because he enjoys the protection of local villagers,” Vigil told AFP.Recommended: How do ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán’s kids live? Central Puebla state said it was using X-ray technology at toll booths to see through cars.Troops in Guatemala launched a special operation at the border with Mexico. It was in that country that Guzmán was first arrested in 1993.Guzmán’s first escape was in 2001, when he slipped past authorities by hiding in a laundry cart in western Jalisco state.Marines recaptured him in February 2014 in a pre-dawn raid in a condo in Mazatlán, a Pacific resort in Sinaloa state, with the DEA’s help.He was then jailed at Altiplano, which houses several other infamous drug capos captured during Peña Nieto’s administration.Peña Nieto setbackGuzmán’s second escape overshadowed Peña Nieto’s visit to France. The government has won praise for capturing a slew of kingpins and Guzmán, a diminutive but feared man whose nickname means “Shorty,” was the president’s biggest trophy.U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said she shared Mexico’s “concern” and offered help for his “swift recapture.”Some U.S. prosecutors wanted to ask for his extradition following last year’s arrest, but Mexican officials insisted on trying him first.“This leads to a big problem with the U.S. government because they asked (for an extradition) and the Mexican government did not deliver him, claiming that he could be held in one of the country’s maximum-security prisons,” said Raúl Benítez Manaut, security expert at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. CASEY Severe but survivable event coming

first_img CASEY: “Severe but survivable” event coming This event will have repercussions on everything from how and where you shop and seek medical care…to how you invest and receive fixed income benefits, such as Social Security. Click here to learn more. Is it time to buy beaten down energy stocks? Energy prices have collapsed over the past 19 months. Last week, oil closed below $27 for the first time since 2007. Oil is now down 70% since June 2014. The price of natural gas has dropped 53% over the same period. Last month it hit $1.74, its lowest price since 1999. Shares of giant U.S. energy companies have crashed… Since June 2014, Exxon Mobil (XOM), the largest U.S. oil company, has fallen 25%. Chesapeake Energy (CHK), the largest U.S. natural gas company, has plummeted 89%. Halliburton (HAL), the largest U.S. oil services company, has plunged 56% since June 2014. Oil services companies sell “picks and shovels” to the oil industry. •  Kinder Morgan’s (KMI) stock has tanked… Kinder Morgan is the largest U.S. pipeline company. It operates 84,000 miles of oil and natural gas pipelines. Companies pay Kinder to transport oil and gas through its pipelines. In the early stages of the energy collapse, brokers sold Kinder stock as a less-risky way to invest in energy. Investors looking for safe income piled in. In 2014, Kinder Morgan paid a 4.8% annual dividend yield…2.5 times higher than the S&P 500’s dividend yield of 1.92%. Big energy companies’ profits depend on oil and gas prices. But as a “toll road” that makes money based on the volume of oil and gas it moves, Kinder should be able to withstand low oil and gas prices. At least that was the theory… In reality, crashing oil & gas prices have slammed Kinder’s business. Last year, the company’s first-quarter sales dropped 11% from the year before…second-quarter sales dropped 12%…and third-quarter sales dropped 14%. Last Wednesday, Kinder Morgan’s stock hit an all-time low of $12.01. That’s a 73% decline in less than two years. •  After Wednesday’s close, Kinder Morgan reported an 8% drop in fourth-quarter sales… The company lost $0.29 per share. It was the worst quarterly loss in the company’s history. •  Many investors were caught off-guard when Kinder Morgan’s stock tanked… Market Watch reported last month: Pipeline and fuel storage companies have been prized by many investors as the safest way to invest in the U.S. shale boom. But the companies paid out most of their available cash to shareholders eager for reliable dividends, which left many of them with large debt loads and at the mercy of lenders’ and investors’ willingness to continue lending to fund new projects. Until recently, borrowing or raising more money hasn’t been a problem. The fees that pipeline companies charge brought in steady, toll road-like revenue, and the companies were much loved by yield-hungry buyers, often wealthy retirees, who wanted steady dividends with little risk. Now that oil and gas prices have plummeted to less than half their 2014 peak, lenders could be tightening their requirements to tap more capital. •  On its earnings call, Kinder Morgan announced major spending cuts… The company slashed this year’s capital spending budget from $4.2 billion to $3.3 billion. Last month, the company cut its quarterly dividend by 75%. It was the first time in company history that Kinder cut its dividend. As Casey readers know, Kinder Morgan is one of many major energy companies to cut spending recently. According to banking giant Barclays, global energy producers cut spending by 23% last year and plan to cut another 15% this year. New Law Cracks Down on Right to Use Cash The U.S. government is trying to restrict your access to cash. But not for the reason you think…According to leaked evidence, it’s much, much worse. We’ll let you know when oil and gas stocks start to carve out a bottom. Chart of the Day Are gold miners carving out a bottom? Today’s chart shows the performance of the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX), which tracks the performance of major gold mining stocks. Gold miners are leveraged to the price of gold. When the price of gold jumps, shares of major gold miners can jump two or three times more. GDX has been in a downtrend since gold peaked in 2011. In the summer of 2015, it started to carve out a bottom. As you can see, the price held above $13 for about six months. However, GDX recently broke below $13 and hit a new low. Although it didn’t drop much below $13, this is a reason to invest with caution. It’s a possible sign that the carved bottom won’t hold. We’re optimistic on gold miners. GDX has fallen 80% since 2011, making gold stocks extremely cheap. When gold stocks rally, the gains could be huge. However, we’re taking a cautious stance for now while we wait to see if this recent bottom holds. Recommended Links Regards, Justin Spittler Delray Beach, Florida January 25, 2016 We want to hear from you. If you have a question or comment, please send it to feedback@caseyresearch.com. We read every email that comes in, and we’ll publish comments, questions, and answers that we think other readers will find useful.center_img •  Investors were happy with Kinder’s cost-cutting plan… Kinder Morgan’s stock jumped 15.6% on Thursday. It was the stock’s best day ever. And it climbed another 11% on Friday. The rally has many investors calling a bottom in Kinder stock. Barron’s published a story over the weekend titled “Kinder Morgan Hits Bottom”… We think these calls are premature. The chart below shows the performance of Kinder Morgan’s stock since the start of 2014. You can barely see the recent spike in Kinder’s stock price… •  The energy market is highly cyclical… It goes through huge booms and busts. Today, the energy market is in a major bust. As Casey readers know, large oil and natural gas deposits (and the companies that own oil & gas infrastructure) are some of the most valuable assets on the planet. Owning these top resource companies can make you rich…if you buy at the right price. Buying top resource companies at bargain prices is a key strategy we use to build lasting wealth. •  But we’re not buying Kinder Morgan stock yet… Kinder Morgan stock is still plummeting. And it’s extremely risky to buy a stock that’s plummeting. Instead, we like to buy stocks that have “carved out a bottom.” “Carving out a bottom” is a simple concept. A stock in a downtrend carves out a bottom when it stops falling, forms a bottom for a period of time…and then starts climbing higher. A stock that’s carving out a bottom should hold above a certain price for a significant amount of time. This is a key signal that buyers are stepping in at this price, giving the stock a floor. The chart below shows video streaming giant Netflix (NFLX) carving out a bottom. It traded in a range for 17 months before finally breaking out in January 2013. The stock went on to gain 257% over the next 11 months. – —last_img read more

USA Today published an opinion column by President

first_imgUSA Today published an opinion column by President Trump Wednesday in which the president falsely accused Democrats of trying to “eviscerate” Medicare, while defending his own record of protecting health care coverage for seniors and others. The column — published just weeks ahead of the midterm elections — underscores the political power of health care to energize voters. But it makes a number of unsubstantiated claims. Here are 5 points to know1. The political context: Health care has emerged as a dominant issue on the campaign trail in the runup to the November elections. According to the Wesleyan Media Project, which tracks congressional advertising, health care was the focus of 41 percent of all campaign ads in September, outpacing taxes (20 percent), jobs (13 percent) and immigration (9 percent). Democrats are particularly focused on health care, devoting 50 percent of their ads to the issue, but health care is also a leading issue in Republican commercials (28 percent), second only to taxes (32 percent).Perhaps sensing that Democrats are gaining traction, Trump has decided to go on the attack, targeting the Democratic proposal known as “Medicare for All.”2. Cost of the plan: Trump claims that expanding the federal government’s Medicare program would cost $32.6 trillion over a decade. But as Business Insider reports, that would actually be a discount compared with the nation’s current health care bill.Trump’s figure was calculated by the libertarian Mercatus Center, but he fails to note that total health care spending under Medicare for All would be about $2 trillion less over the decade than currently projected. The federal government would pay more, but Americans on the whole would pay less.Remember that the U.S. already spends far more per person on health care than does any other country. And when you count the tax break for employer-provided insurance, the federal government already pays about two-thirds of this bill. But because of the fragmented private insurance system, the government gets none of the efficiency or buying power that a single-payer system would provide.3. Health care rationing: Trump claims — with no supporting evidence — that “the Democratic plan would inevitably lead to the massive rationing of health care. Doctors and hospitals would be put out of business. Seniors would lose access to their favorite doctors. There would be long wait lines for appointments and procedures. Previously covered care would effectively be denied.”Detailed implementation of any single-payer plan would of course be subject to substantial negotiation. But the Medicare for All bill drafted by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., states explicitly that “Nothing in this Act shall prohibit an institutional or individual provider from entering into a private contract with an enrolled individual for any item or service” outside the plan.4. Pre-existing conditions: Trump notes that as a candidate, he “promised that we would protect coverage for patients with pre-existing conditions.” In fact, Trump and his fellow Republicans tried — unsuccessfully — to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which guarantees insurance coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. GOP plans would leave it up to the states to craft alternative protections. In addition, Republican attorneys general have sued to overturn Obamacare’s protections, and the Trump administration has declined to defend them.America’s Health Insurance Plans, the trade group for the insurance industry, warns that ending the Obamacare guarantee could result in hardship for the estimated 130 million Americans under 65 with pre-existing conditions.”Removing those provisions will result in renewed uncertainty in the individual market, create a patchwork of requirements in the states, cause rates to go even higher for older Americans and sicker patients, and make it challenging to introduce products and rates for 2019,” AHIP said in a statement in June.5. Strength of Medicare: Trump writes that “Democrats have already harmed seniors by slashing Medicare by more than $800 billion over 10 years to pay for Obamacare. Likewise, Democrats would gut Medicare with their planned government takeover of American health care.”He is repeating a claim that was widely debunked during the 2012 election. The Affordable Care Act actually strengthened the solvency of Medicare, but it has since been weakened again by the GOP tax cut.The president is trying to play on the fears of seniors — who vote in large numbers — with the claim that any effort to improve health security for younger Americans must come at their expense. But that is a false choice. Copyright 2018 NPR. To see more, visit http://www.npr.org/.last_img read more

How to Register you SimCard Details Using Your National ID With Your

first_imgKenya’s Communications Authority to take tough measures on unregistered simcards. Image Credit: bagu.org Advertisement Following a directive from the Government regulatory body of communications in Uganda; Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) on Tuesday this week issued a 7 day ultimatum to all Ugandans to have their SimCard registration particulars updated using their National IDs or Passports, short of which they would be deactivated, if not taken serious or done in time. The deadline for this process is Wednesday April 12th, 2017. This directive affects both our new and existing customers.“All existing subscribers should present their National ID’s to their operators for verification within 7 days,” UCC writes in a tweet. – Advertisement – To avoid disconnection or disturbance or any other problems, in just a few simple steps, have you SimCard details updated by you. The good news is that you won’t have to go line up at at the telecom outlets for this. If you see it’s impossible/might be difficult for you, ask a friend to help you out.The acceptable customer identification documents for SIM registration are:Ugandans- National identification card.Non-Ugandans- Passport.Refugees- Registration documents from office of the Prime Minister.Corporate bodies- Registration documents certified by the Uganda Registration Services. In this scenario, we used a National ID!So follow these four simple steps and in less than a minute or two, you will be done. We tried this on MTN and Airtel, but the process is still the same.Step One: Launch you dial app, and dial *197# and press the send button or call button. If you’re phone is a dual SimCard holder, select one operator at a time. For instance if you’ve MTN and Airtel, you can choose which to start with, in this example we started with MTN (then followed the same steps for Airtel). Step Two: From the pop-up option, select the option of National ID Details. When we carried out this, we found out that MTN had three options on the pop-up list and Airtel had only two. But don’t worry, just select the ‘National ID Details’ option, and click OK or send. MTN AirtelStep Three: You will be asked to enter your National ID Number (NIN). Your NIN is the 13 digit number on your ID that starts with either CF or CM (CM*******). To locate the NIN, its just below the Nationality section or above the Date of Birth section.Step Four: You’re asked to enter you’re details, this is your First Name and Surname. With MTN, you’re asked to enter you’re First Name first and then Surname follows (This is vice-versa to Airtel, ‘but still its the same procedure’.). First NameStep Five: You will receive a confirmation that states “Your SIM is fully registered, Thank You.” or “Dear customer, your request has been accepted successfully” for Airtel and MTN respectively. As per the UCC directive, all SIM cards whose details are not updated by Thursday April 20th, 2017 shall be deactivated.Editor’s Note: If you read this article, inform a friend to tell a friend, and a friend. Don’t get disconnected.[related-posts]last_img read more
