Located just metres from each other, supporters of the People’s National Party (PNP) stronghold in Parade Gardens – otherwise called Tel Aviv and those of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in South Side remained calm as they prepared to cast their votes early this morning. The two communities have been at political loggerheads for decades, but residents have said that the rivalry is now more gang – related. According to residents, there has been no recent politically related incident, but they are concerned about the state of shooting that has occurred in the area in recent weeks. “The gang rivalry still deh bout, but no politics. We dun wid dem ting deh long time. We are all friends,” Sandra Ellis said.
A miner was on Thursday remanded to prison after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to a murder charge.Accused Michael Melville being escorted out of the courtroom by a Police OfficerPolice Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield revealed that during the period of December 2, 2015 and December 5, 2015, it was alleged that Michael Melville, 31, murdered Jose Oliveira Silva while at Arau Landing, Wenamu River, Essequibo.The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until March 20, 2018.Melville was previously charged for the said murder, but the matter was discharged since the witnesses failed to appear; however, the charge was reinstituted.
