first_imgSeagate is a name associated with providing storage devices and in particular hard drives. But today the company is introducing a new service that aims to protect the data you put on hard drives as well as the drives themselves.Seagate Rescue and Seagate Rescue and Replace will offer consumers the ability to protect the data stored on a hard drive as well as guaranteeing a replacement for a hard drive if it fails, data gets corrupted, or you accidentally delete something. And this isn’t limited to just Seagate-branded storage devices, Seagate will recover data from and/or replace any brand of drive.Unlike data backup services, Seagate Rescue will recover the data stored on a hard drive that has stopped working. So if you forgot to backup, or a backup failed before the drive failed, Rescue still gives you a good chance of recovering your data. Alternatively, Rescue and Replace will not only recover the data, it will provide you with a replacement hard drive with the data on so you can carry on as normal. The costs associated with these services depend on which you want and for how long. Rescue will cost $29.99 for a 2-year plan, $39.99 for 3 years, and $49.99 for 4 years. Rescue and Replace is understandably more expensive, and costs $39.99, $49.99, or $59.99 for the same 2, 3, or 4 year coverage. Even so, $50 to get data recovery and drive replacement for 4 years is not expensive in my opinion.Seagate intends to roll out this service slowly. You’ll see it first offered via Seagate.com in Canada and across Europe, and then rolled out as actual retail protection packages through a number of retailers. It is expected they’ll be packaged with actual hard drive purchases in store, and are sure to be tempting to a lot of people. Seagate is aiming to have Rescue and Replace available pretty much everywhere by the middle of next year.last_img
